How does Google make money from Android?

How does Google make money from Android?

Google made $31 billion in revenue from Android, according to a court filing by Oracle.
Oracle is engaged in a protracted lawsuit against Google, over its alleged infringement in Android of two of Oracle’s Java-related patents. In a hearing last week, Oracle’s counsel claimed that Google not only makes money off Android, it does so on a large scale: $31 billion in revenue and $22 billion in profit since 2008.
It’s important to note that these figures didn’t come from Google directly. It looks like Oracle calculated the profits based on documents provided by Google. Because Oracle wants compensation from Google, it benefits from a higher estimate, so take it with a grain of salt.
On the other side, Google is in a tricky situation: publicly admitting it makes a lot of money from Android bolsters Oracle’s financial claims, while denying it could spook investors worried that Android is a money sink. That’s why Google has always been tightlipped about Android financial data.
Android is, of course, free to use by any OEM. So how is Google able to make billions in profits from it?
We can only guess, but two sources stand out: mobile advertising and app sales.

Mobile advertising

Mobile advertising is clearly the main source of revenue when it comes to Android. We know –also thanks to Oracle’s lawyers – that Google paid Apple $1 billion to be the default search engine on iPhones and iPads in 2014. That’s just the tax that Google had to pay for the privilege, so the actual iOS revenue is likely a few times larger.
iOS users are more lucrative compared to Android users from an advertising perspective, because, on average, they have larger incomes and they are more likely to buy stuff online. But Android users are much more numerous than iOS users. In September 2015, Google said there were 1.4 billion Android devices in use worldwide. Even with a lower average revenue per user, the money that Google makes from ads shown on Android devices is probably significantly larger than the iOS revenue. And, there is no Apple tax to pay.
Google makes money from the ads that are displayed when users search via its app and online. Many people also use YouTube, Google Maps, Drive, Gmail, and Google’s many other apps and services. Google shows ads in some of these services, but it also analyzes user data to improve the relevancy of the ads it serves in other places. And, because every phone user has to sign in with their unique account when setting up a phone, the data is accurate and highly personal.
Google also makes a few cents whenever you click one of those ads shown in many ad-supported apps.

Now mobile advertising makes Google less money than computer searches, because the value of a “click” is generally smaller. But mobile usage increases every year, and thanks to Android and its suite of apps, Google has a network of capillaries extracting money out of the entire ecosystem.

Apps

Apps are the second big source of money for Google. The company takes a cut from every sale app developers make on the Play Store. And it’s a big store, with over 1.5 million apps, out of which a big chunk are paid apps or apps that offer in-app purchases. Google takes a 30% cut out of every sale, offering in exchange the platform and some of the required infrastructure, including a cloud system for delivering notifications.
Android apps tend to generate less revenue compared to iOS apps, for the same reason iOS users tend to be more valuable from an advertiser’s point of view. Revenue from Apple apps is 70% larger than Android apps revenue, despite the fact that Android apps have twice the number of installs. All that considered, thanks to the sheer size of the Android platform, it’s safe to say that Google makes a decent chunk of money out of its 30% cut of app revenue. That chuck is only getting bigger, as Android app installations continue to grow rapidly.
Google said during Google I/O 2015 that in 2014 alone it paid $7 billion to developers.  At a 70% developer share, the revenue from Android apps in 2014 was an impressive $10 billion.

Play Store media

Google also makes some money from the media side of the Play Store. Paid music, movies, books, and subscriptions are just a tap away for hundreds of millions of users, so even with a low usage rate, it’s fair to assume that there’s a steady trickle of money coming in from this source.

Everything else

Mobile advertising and app sales are the biggest sources of Android revenue for Google. The company sells some hardware, but with the small profit margins that hardware allows, that money is largely insignificant. The same can be said about ventures like Android Pay and Project Fi.
Google does not make money from Android in itself. Anyone can take the Android source code and use it on any device. Likewise, Google doesn’t make money from licensing its suite of mobile Android apps. Apps like Google and YouTube are free, even though manufacturersreportedly have to pay third-party testing companies six-figure sums to ensure that their devices meet Google’s compatibility requirements.

$31 billion?

Getting back to the revenues claimed by Oracle, how realistic is the $31 billion figure? Well, we know that in Q3 2012, Google boasted 500 million active Android devices and a mobile revenue run rate of $8 billion (including iOS). In the same quarter of 2011, it was just $2.5 billion.
Since then, the number of Android devices nearly tripled and the number of iOS devices ballooned as well. Plus, in 2016, Android has far more mobile apps and Play Store content. All this considered, the $31 billion lifetime estimate doesn’t look too farfetched. For what is worth, Google did not dispute this figure, it just wanted it to be made confidential. It’s even possible that the sum is actually smaller than reality, depending on how Oracle defines revenues.
At the very least, it’s clear that critics that derided Google for not making any money from Android were terribly wrong.

How To Get Cortana on Android Now

Microsoft is going to release its virtual assistant Cortana to Android and iOS. Many Microsoft Windows users are already fans of Cortana, especially with its integration in Windows 10. The decision for launching Cortana as a cross-platform app might not be groundbreaking, as both Android and iOS have there own digital assistants, Google Nowand Siri respectively.
For now, you will not be able to get Cortana from the Google Play Store, as it is not finalised yet and isn’t ready for a release. However, the Cortana APK file has been release via many source, so you can stillsideload the app from another source.

Limitations

Before we start with the process, you should know that not all of the features of Cortana will work on Android. You will be able to process almost all commands, but the commands related to the OS settings will not work. For example, Cortana will not be able to access system settings or open apps using “Open (app name)” command. So you can’t ask her to “Open application manager” or similar commands.

Cortana Installation

You can’t get Cortana from Google Play Store, so you will have to sideload the app. Cortana for Android APK file is available for free to download via many sources. However, default Android settings don’t allow you to install apps from sources other than Google Play Store. So you will first have to enable installation from unknown sources to install the APK file.

Enable Unknown Sources

To enable Unknown Sources, tap on “Settings” and in there, tap on “Security”. Now, scroll down and you will see the option “Unknown Sources”. Tap on it to check the checkbox that enables “Unknown Sources”.

Note: Enabling “Unknown Sources” also means that you may also download apps from shady sources leading to damaging your phone system. So it is advised that after downloading the Cortana APK file, you disable this feature.

Download and Install Cortana

You can download Cortana from APKMirror.com for free (its a 19.4 MB file). Try to download the latest updated version as the Cortana for Android is still in beta (testing phase) so it will be updated frequently before the final release.
Once downloaded, just tap on the APK file and then tap on “Install” after checking all the permission to install the app.

Set up Cortana

When you will launch Cortana, you will be asked to accept Terms and Conditions and understand what a virtual assistant is. Just tap on “Next” on each page after reading to accept.

After that, you will be asked to provide the name by which Cortana may call you. Here, enter your name/nickname that you are comfortable with and tap on “Enter”. After that you will have to log in with your Microsoft Account to access Cortana.
If you use any of Microsoft services, like Outlook, Office 365, Xbox or OneDrive, etc. then you already have a Microsoft account, just use that. Otherwise, you will have to create a new account to use Cortana.
Enter your Microsoft account details and tap on “Next” to start using Cortana.

How to use Cortana for Android

Cortana is not only a good-looking artificial intelligence character from the Halo game series, it has also become the official voice-operated digital assistant from Microsoft. And because it is also available on Android, it competes directly with Google Now.
Which one is superior? That is a topic for another day. What we do know is the Search Giant’s solution is not for everyone, so we thought we would show you a bit about how Cortana actually works. The application officially came out of beta about a couple months ago, so it’s time to get playing with it, right?

What is Cortana?

Cortana is Microsoft’s response to services like Google Now and Siri. In a nutshell, it is a digital assistant application that will help you better organize your life through voice commands, quick options and proactive information. You can easily set alarms, organize your calendar, get details on the latest popular sports games, contact people and even joke around (Cortana has a great sense of humor!).

Home

Most of the magic will happen here. The Home section is where you can either type your inquiry or start a voice action. These commands are right at the bottom of the page. Simply type or use voice to perform any commands. One can easily ask Cortana to search for content, set reminders/alarms, place phone calls, send messages, show the weather and more. Just tap the text or microphone section to jump into action.
Look a bit higher and you will see a crowd information, though. Microsoft has decided to put its cards front and center. Much like Google Now, Cortana presents you with card-style blocks that offer a quick look at relevant information. This will include content like weather, local events, news, sports, travel info, finance updates, food within your vicinity and more. It can all be controlled from the Notebook section, which we will touch on next.
Microsoft really has checked all the right boxes here. The welcoming page is simple, full of helpful information (which can be customized) and has all the input methods you need. It certainly feels cozy.

Notebook

The whole point about services like Google Now and Cortana is that they are personalized. This is a digital assistant, and like a human assistant it has to know you very well. What kind of cards would you like to see in Cortana?
You can now customize your experience to help Cortana provide better information, proactively. Simply hit the 3-line menu button on the top-left corner and tap on “Notebook”. You will be presented with a bevy of options to customize the experience. Start by changing your name to a nickname (it can be whatever you want) under About Me. You can also make a list of your favorite places from the same spot.
Move down the list and you will find a long list of cards to opt in and out of. I would just go through the whole list and customize my experience as much as possible. We know it takes time, but it will really help Cortana get things started. It is pretty thorough, something I happen to like.
We suppose the main difference between Cortana and Google Now is that the latter is a bit more… knowledgeable, at least at first. Google can pull information from all your emails, calendar and other sources. It seems Cortana is a bit more limited in this sense, which is why you need to do things manually.

Reminders

For some reason Microsoft decided to dedicate a whole section of the Cortana app to reminders. I mean sure, reminders are cool, but I don’t know why these couldn’t be tucked away as a secondary menu.

Settings

Cortana is simple… and that’s how it should be. A digital assistant should take a load off your shoulders, not add more chores and preparations to your daily routine. This is something one can clearly see when tapping that Settings option.
For starters, about a third of what we find here consists of legal literature. You know, service agreements and such. We will ignore these for now (as you do).
The settings we actually care about will be mostly on the top part of the Settings page. One cool option is the ability to choose whether or not you want other Cortana-powered devices to get missed call notifications when you… miss a call on your phone. It can be handy if you forgot to take your phone off silent, or you left it charging in a soundproof room somewhere else in the house (it happens!).
One can also opt to put a Cortana Voice shortcut in your home screen. This looks like another app and works seamlessly. Simply tap it: a small window will hover over the UI and Cortana will start listening, allowing you to use voice actions for whatever Cortana can do.
Managing your profile, Bing SafeSearch settings and language are also possible from the Settings.

Putting Cortana front and center

Google Now is built right into your phone’s operating system, but that doesn’t mean it can’t be replaced in every important way. Even something as native as the search function that comes up when you drag your finger up from the home button can be modified to be powered by Cortana.
Once Cortana is installed, Google Now will stop being the default service for this action (in a similar fashion to launchers, in relation to the home button). Simply perform the swipe up from your home button and you will be asked which service you would rather use – Google Now or Cortana (or whatever else you may have). Make your selection and select “Always” (or don’t).

Helpful Cortana commands:

  • Call ____.
  • Call ____ on speakerphone.
  • Redial.
  • Press ____ (number).
  • Text ___: (say the message).
  • Send a message to ____: (say the message).
  • Show me messages from ____.

  • How is traffic on my way home?
  • Navigate to ____.
  • Where am I?
  • Are there any ____ restaurants near me?
  • What is the status on flght ____?
  • Play ____ (artist, song, album, genre, playlist).
  • Pause the music.
  • Resume the music.
  • Play the next track.
  • How tall is Barack Obama?

  • Open camera.
  • Turn WiFi on/off.
  • Show me the top headlines.
  • Convert $100 USD to Mexican pesos.

There is an infinity of commands you can use, these are only the ones we see as most helpful; especially the last one.

Wrapping up

So there you have it, guys. This has been your in-depth look at Microsoft’s mobile digital assistant. Now it’s time to decide whether you will use it over Google Now. What do you think? Which one are you opting for?
I happen to prefer Google Now, as it integrates with other Google services, which most of us already use. But if it wasn’t for that, I would be totally down to use Cortana. I have never had any issues with it, and my testing went smooth as butter. It will never have the same integration Google Now has with Android, but that’s to be expected, and it definitely does enough. It also looks sleek, works great and manages to be very helpful. Plus… it’s freaking Cortana!

Sony Xperia Z6 rumor roundup: release date, price, specs, features

Sony-Xperia-M4-Aqua-Review-15
It’s a new year and we are looking forward to covering some of the best smartphones this industry has ever seen. Of course, SamsungHTCMotorola and all the other main guys are bringing their biggest guns to battle, but Sony certainly doesn’t plan to fall behind.
While Sony is struggling to keep up with the competition, their devices have always been outstanding. Their flagship Z series is known for its powerful specs, unique designs, durable build and unique features. Now we await the latest iteration – the Sony Xperia Z6.

Those looking for a one-stop shop to get all their Sony Xperia Z6 details need to look no further. Just bookmark this page. We will continue to update the post as more information continues to emerge, so you will always be kept in the loop.

Something to keep in mind

Of course, this is an unannounced device, so consider this more of a rumor roundup for now. Everything in here is to be taken with a pinch of salt. Much of this information is based on speculation, leaks and rumors, but we will try to keep details as solid as possible.
With that in mind, let’s go over what we (think we) know about the upcoming Sony Xperia Z6.
sony-logo-aa-2

Cutting down?

Those who have been following Sony’s smartphone history will know the company is not moving slowly. Take the Xperia Z5 as an example; that phone came out only 3 months after the Xperia Z4! And the Z3 was released less than a year before that.
This is good for keeping customers at the bleeding edge of technology, but as Sony’s business continues to struggle, the Japanese company may be realizing it’s time to slow things down and focus on expanding their smartphones’ life span. Not to mention, the quick cycles for the Z series means that some of the models barely had any major differences, spec wise. By increasing the gap between releases, Sony’s new flagships will finally stand out more from one another.
Both CNBeta and Digitimes reported that Sony will only be releasing 2 flagship devices in 2016. Now, what does this mean, exactly? Are they saying there will be a Z6 and Z7 coming this year?
sony xperia z5 premium aa 13
In short, Sony may be releasing less devices… or not. It all depends on how the interpretation of “2 flagships” is taken. That is, if all these rumors are even true.

A possible change in design

Can you tell one flagship Sony smartphone from another? No one will judge if you can’t. Sony is a big fan of the whole “if it isn’t broken, don’t fix it” philosophy of design. They found a formula for a phone that looks sleek and is solid, but the issue is that they really haven’t changed it much at all since the Sony Xperia Z1. While this continues to be a good look for Xperia phones, it’s a bit over-used and many believe it’s time for a change. Thankfully, it seems Sony may finally be ready to switch things up a bit.
The Sony Xperia Z6 is said to make extensive use of metal, as opposed to previous generation flagships, which featured a metal frame with glass sides. Metal looks to be the material of choice for the future of smartphones, so this might make Sony phones more enticing in the markets where it is lacking a following.
sony xperia z5 premium aa 18
Another big change could be the number of variants produced under the Z6 banner. While rumors suggest there were only be two flagships released by Sony in 2016, the Z6 will come in different flavors, similar to how the Z5 had the Premium, Compact, and standard version. Supposedly there will be at least 5 different versions of the Xperia Z6, with screen sizes ranging between 4-inches and 6.4-inches, with the standard model offering a 5.2-inch display.

Specs

Not much is known about the specs the Sony Xperia Z6 will tout, but if there actually do end up being 5 models, it will likely depend on the size. As mentioned above, screen sizes are said to range between 4 inches and 6.4 inches. We have also heard that the upcoming flagship will be touting a powerful Qualcomm Snapdragon 820 processor.
Other rumored specs include 3-4 GB of RAM, 32-128 GB of internal storage and a powerful camera (in usual Sony fashion). We are also not sure if Sony will continue to stick with 1080p screens, but we say it’s time to at least upgrade to QHD (2560×1440). It also seems pretty likely at least one model will have 4K, if the Sony Xperia Z5 Premium is anything to go by at least.
sony xperia z5 & z5 compact & Z5 premium aa 19

Price and release date

Pricing details have been scarce, but we can expect the Sony Xperia Z6 to compete with all other high-end smartphones in the market. Sony has never been one to go for low price tags, after all.
Release windows are rumored to be as expected when it comes to usual Xperia launches, so that likely means one in the summer and a second in October.

Wrapping up

So there you have it, guys. That is about all we can tell you about the Sony Xperia Z6 and company, for now. Do keep in mind we are only following rumors, leaks and speculations that have a certain level of credibility backing them, so there are definitely other obscure bits of info out there. Just stay curious about the validity of any information for now.
As we mentioned in the beginning of the post, we will continue to update this post as more information emerges, so don’t forget to keep it tuned to Android Authority and bookmark this page to keep getting all the juicy details!
